’Twas the Night Before Christmas

’Twas the night before Christmas,
and all through the yard
Not a weed had been pulled,
they’d grown wild and hard.
The leaves were all settled in thick, crunchy beds,
While the garden lay drooping, long past being dead.
The playset leaned sideways, its swing all askew,
As if whispering, “You never fixed me and now I am through.”
The shrubs, once well-shaped, now resembled old wigs,
And sticks from the oak looked like pick-up stick twigs.
I gazed from the window, hot cider in tow,
And groaned at the chaos displayed down below.
“For guests will be coming,” I whispered in fear,
“And THIS is the yard welcoming Christmas this year?”
The walkway was hidden, the mulch had turned grey,
The lights on the porch barely glowed through the fray.
The gutters were heavy with leaves from the fall
A seasonal avalanche just waiting to call.
“Oh why,” I lamented, “did I wait so long?
My yard’s singing chaos not carols or song.”
If only I’d called Crystal Green weeks ago,
My yard would be spotless and gleaming with snow.
But just then I heard something soft in the night
A jingle? A chuckle? Are things really alright?
I opened the door and stepped out for a peek…
And there stood Saint Zack with a grin on his cheek.
Then Tanner appeared with a rake and some blowers,
“Don’t worry one ounce, we help out home owners!”
We’ll tidy these beds, haul debris out of sight,
And make sure your home’s looking merry tonight.”
The crew sprang to action with skill and good cheer,
Their attention to detail just melted my fear.
The walkway re-sparkled, the shrubs stood up tall,
The gutters were cleared of their autumnal haul.
The playset stood proudly, the mulch looked brand new,
The garden revived with a fresh festive hue.
And when they were finished — oh, what a delight!
My yard looked like Christmas had kissed it goodnight.
Then Zack tipped his hat, the crew climbed in their trucks,
I blew them a kiss & their cheeks blushed, “aw-shucks”!
